"The Circus" Clip (1928)
The Lion’s Cage is a scene from The Circus that features Charlie Chaplin getting stuck in a circus cage that has a sleeping lion. It is comical, exciting, and constantly keeps the audience on edge because the audience never knows whether or not the lion will awaken and eat Chaplin. Towards the end, a beautiful female opens the door for Chaplin, only to find him showing off his bravery by staying in the cage for longer. As soon as the lion awakens however, Chaplin sprints away and climbs a pole, showing his cowardness. Scenes such as this one added to the entertainment value of Chaplin’s films. It gives a good laugh to the audience even though the actors do not talk in the film. Chaplin’s films gave people in the United States during the 1920’s joy and excitement. For the first time ever, entertainment was captured on films that people could watch.
